Not in a US state, DC or Puerto Rico
The Census Geocoder covers the 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico. This point is outside that area, so there is no to show.
Not available here: county, city, ZIP code, state, school district, congressional district, township.
Still available: elevation and time zone (see below).

How it works
- Your point comes from your device's GPS, a US address (matched by the Census Geocoder), typed coordinates or a click on the map.
- The coordinates go to the Census Geocoder, which returns the ZIP Code Tabulation Area that contains them (2020 Census ZCTAs) with its land and water area.
- The same single lookup gives the city, county, school district, congressional district and township in the at-a-glance card.
- The map outlines the ZIP code area from Census TIGERweb, simplified so it loads quickly.
ZIP codes and ZIP code areas
The Postal Service assigns ZIP codes to delivery routes and addresses, and changes them when routes change (USPS). Routes are lines, not areas, so there is no official ZIP code map. To publish statistics by ZIP code, the Census Bureau buildsZIP Code Tabulation Areas from census blocks once per decennial census. This tool uses those areas, which is why it can answer for any point, including a spot with no street address.

Frequently asked questions
Is a ZCTA the same as a ZIP code?
Nearly, but not exactly. A USPS ZIP code is a set of mail delivery routes, not an area with a fixed boundary. The Census Bureau draws ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) by giving each census block the ZIP code used by most of the addresses in it. For most points the ZCTA code is the ZIP code you would write on mail.
Why could this differ from my mailing ZIP code?
Three common reasons: near the edge of a ZIP area a block can be assigned to the neighboring ZIP code; ZIP codes used only for PO boxes or a single large mailer usually have no ZCTA; and ZCTAs come from the 2020 Census, so ZIP codes created or changed since then are not reflected. For the mailing ZIP code of an address, use the USPS ZIP Code lookup.
How many ZIP code areas are there?
The 2020 Census has 33,791 ZCTAs. There are more USPS ZIP codes than that, because PO box and single-address ZIP codes cover no area of their own.
Can a ZIP code cross county or state lines?
Yes. ZIP codes follow postal routes, not county or state lines, so one ZIP code can cover parts of several counties. The answer shows the county at your exact point.
How do I find my ZIP+4 code?
The last four digits point to a specific delivery segment, such as one side of a street, a building or a PO box. They are not part of Census data. Look up a street address with the USPS ZIP Code lookup to get the full ZIP+4.
Why does it say there is no ZIP code area here?
The Census leaves out blocks with no mailing addresses, such as large parks, forests and lakes, so some land is in no ZCTA. Pick a point nearer homes or businesses, or search the address.
Does this work outside the US?
No. ZCTAs exist only for the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Elsewhere the tool still shows elevation and time zone.
