Straight-line distance. Summits: USGS GNIS. Elevations: USGS 3DEP.
How it works
We search the U.S. Geological Survey's list of about 69,000 named summits for the ones closest to your position, measure the straight-line distance and compass direction to each, and look up each summit's elevation from the USGS 3D Elevation Program. The closest summits appear as pins on the map.

Frequently asked questions
Which mountains are included?
Every feature the U.S. Geological Survey lists as a "Summit" in its Geographic Names Information System: named peaks, mountains, hills, buttes and knobs. Unnamed high points are not included.
Where do the elevations come from?
GNIS lists names and positions but not heights, so we look up the ground elevation at each summit point from the USGS 3D Elevation Program. The GNIS point is not always on the exact top, so values can be a little below the official summit height.
Is the distance a hiking distance?
No. It is the straight-line distance on the map. Trails are longer and climb, so plan with a trail map.
Does it work outside the United States?
Not yet. The summit list comes from GNIS, which covers the United States.
