How it is calculated

Standard pressure: P = 101.325 kPa × (1 − 2.25577 × 10⁻⁵ × h)5.25588, with h in meters (U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1976). With a forecast value, we scale it by the same ratio: pressure here ≈ sea-level pressure × (standard pressure at your elevation ÷ standard sea-level pressure). That is an approximation; the real correction also depends on temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my weather app show sea-level pressure even though I live high up?

Weather stations convert their readings to the value they would show at sea level, so maps from different elevations can be compared (NOAA). The pressure you actually feel at elevation is lower; enter the forecast value below to convert it.

What is standard air pressure at sea level?

29.92 inches of mercury, which is 1013.25 hPa (millibars), 14.70 psi or 101.325 kPa.

How much does air pressure drop with elevation?

Roughly 1 inHg per 1,000 ft near sea level, falling more slowly as you go higher. At about 18,000 ft the pressure is half of sea level; the table lists standard values.

Does lower pressure affect my body or cooking?

Yes. Lower pressure means less oxygen per breath and a lower boiling point for water. See the boiling point calculator for cooking temperatures.
